Yunnan(IPA: \ˈyü-ˈnän\; simplified Chinese: 云南; traditional Chinese: 雲南; pinyin: Yúnnán; literally "south of the clouds") is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the far south of the country spanning approximately 394,000 square kilometers (152,000 square miles). The capital of the province is Kunming. The name of Yunnan means "south of Yunling Mountains". The province borders Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam.
The province is known to be one of the most ethnically diverse in China. 36 of China's 56 officially recognized ethnic groups - many of them indigenous to the area and speaking non-Sinitic languages, reside in Yunnan - making it a cultural mosaic. The province is also home to renowned tourist attractions and beautiful natural scenery.
